The New Year can be a great time to reflect and re-energize. Many of us review our current state of affairs and create resolutions or personal goals. Glossy magazines and websites might suggest the New Year is a good time for a “new you”. But striving for a “new you” can seem daunting. Instead, aiming to construct a “new view” can be a practical and attainable solution as you consider your resolutions this New Year. Constructing a “new view” can be as simple as three easy steps:
1. View your resolution from a place of positivity
As you consider a change you would like to make, state your desire as an observable, positive behavior. Be clear, specific and concise. Instead of stating your resolution as “I am going to stop yelling at my kids at bedtime,” try “I will take 3 deep breaths before responding during the bedtime routine.” When we state an intention from an affirmative place, it helps bring energy and optimism to the new plan.
2. Create your resolution from a smaller viewpoint
Focus on one small step before looking to make a broader change. An example of a resolution regarding self-care (vitally important for busy parents) might be “I will attend one yoga class a week” rather than “I will start exercising regularly.” Be patient and allow yourself time to make this part of your consistent routine. This puts you in position to be successful and gain confidence with your initial resolution before expanding your goal.
3. Embrace a viewpoint of abundance verses lack
Make a commitment to bring out the best of what already exists within you. Honor and accept where you are and build your intention from here. Instead of saying, “I want to be a better parent and spend more time with my child”, try saying something like, “I will appreciate the moments when I am present with my child.” This shift helps us appreciate our “work in progress” rather than focus on our missteps or limits.
Consider making your New Year’s resolutions from a slightly different perspective this year. Your intention will manifest in lasting positive changes for you and your family. Wishing you a year of growth and joy!
